Saint Brigid’s Day Celebration
St. Brigid is the Mother Saint of Ireland, but did you know that her famous St. Brigid’s Cross is related to an ancient Celtic symbol of the sun? Yes, and St. Brigid’s Day was long celebrated in pagan times as Imbolc, which would herald the return of the sun and beginnings of the coming Spring.
While some historians argue that Brigid is a Christianisation of the Celtic goddess Brid, Brigid is nevertheless a celebrated part of our country’s rich history. And as part of that celebration, we invite you to join us to celebrate this important festival weekend.
Weave your very own St. Brigid’s Cross with local weaver Cristina Nicotra, which when placed above your door is believed to ensure good fortune!
Enjoy a short but rich presentation of art related to St. Brigid, hosted by heritage author Vawn Corrigan.
Enjoy a short original dance piece based upon the story of St. Brigid’s Cloak, performed by Karen.
And to mark the end of the session, we’ll have a few traditional tunes on the flute and tin whistle, centred around St. Brigid and discuss the beginning of spring, with the very talented Evelyn Broderick!
This is a free event, but places are limited. So please, email events@standrewsrialto.ie to book your place.
